Becoming A Virtual PA

After 8 years working as PA to the CEO and Head of Finance & Administration for a finance broker, the company went into liquidation and I was let go. I can honestly say that I loved that job and the people I worked with and I was annihilated when it happened.

The fiscal end results of the redundancy were troublesome, but controllable short-term. Nonetheless what I totally under-estimated was the emotional effect it was to have on me.

I automatically set about hunting for another job but after so many years with one company, I had carved out a role for myself which simply didn't exist in other corporations. I also discovered that I had no desire to work for anybody else. I had become cold hearted about being an employee, something which I had never experienced before myself and had always found annoying in others.

Whilst I had confidence in my abilities and abilities, I invented all sorts of reasons explaining why positions wouldn't suit me. I hadn't , however , lost the zeal to work and to demonstrate high productivity, so I started to check out the possibility of starting my personal business.

It seemed a clear call to remain inside my speciality and data and so I turned into a Virtual PA. I can stiil take an advantage from a workload which is exceedingly sundry and incorporates all my abilities but I'm my personal boss.

Two of the major benefits I now enjoy are working in different industries and with different folks. One of the key sides of a good PA is the working relationship with their manager which, as an employed PA, steadily builds up over a period. As a Virtual PA it's an aspect which I definitely focus on, to foster that relationship regardless of working remotely. It is interesting to find out how my style changes from customer to client dependent upon their own style, preferred working methods and approach for example.

I also find that my talents are kept far more recent as I mostly guarantee I Am researching the best technology, software, working practices etc. Plus my client’s projects are so wide ranging I Am consistently using different abilities which might not always be the case when working for one employer.

I wouldn't counsel redundancy to anyone, but with hindsight it was not the end of the world – just the beginning of my Virtual PA business. If you would like to take a similar journey then why not hunt down a VA Training Course.
