An International Student’s Guide To Fighting Homesickness

Living abroad for the first time in your life can be very exciting. It can also be very overwhelming at times. However, there are a number of things you can do in order to fight homesickness and make the most of your experience. Try out these tips to help you ease out of feelings of homesickness.

Students living away from home for the first time may feel overwhelmed with their new surroundings. In this case, make sure you find someone who you can talk to you. You may also find comfort with other international students who are going through a similar experience. When you share a common experience with a friend or trusted counselor, you will find the transition phase is easier to deal with.

Being homesick is part of the process of living away from your family, friends and country, so make sure you are prepared to deal with it. Make sure you know how to call home when you need too. Do you have a favorite photo album or other memorabilia that you cherish, which gives you comfort? Bring your brown boots, those you love and remind you of your country’s hillsides. Bring a few fond memories of home with you.

Make sure to stay active. Studying abroad is your time to challenge yourself academically as well as involve yourself in a new culture. Fill up your time studying, volunteering, and making new friends. When you are busy you will have little time for being homesick.

Be patient! Learning a new language and getting used to a new culture can be hard, remember to stay patient. You may even find that funny-looking men’s watches will become appealing to you over time. It is just a matter of getting through the transition period. Start-up conversations with your roommate, and other people apart of your campus community. This will help you pick up the language and culture.

Get involved in your campus. Even though you may find comfort with students from similar backgrounds, do not forget to mingle with other students. The college experience is full of opportunity to learn about different cultures and backgrounds. Do not limit yourself to what you know best.

You no longer have your parents reminding you to get enough sleep, food or exercise, so make sure you are doing these things yourself. Incorporate a healthy balance of all of these things in your life. Enjoy some of your old hobbies. If you are interested in designing special men wedding bands, do this when you have spare time. However, do not forget to try the new experiences that are awaiting you in your host country.
