From January till May 2010, enterprises within Guangdong province imported 1.562 million tons of soybeans with a value of USD 700 million, respectively down 11.8% and 3.3% year-on-year; the average import price was USD 450.9 per ton, up 9.7% year-on-year.

 

? Average import price continued falling back. Since the beginning of this year, the average price of soybeans imported to Guangdong Province has been falling all the way from January 2010 to USD 432.9 per ton in May 2010, down 2.5% year-on-year and down 2.5% month-on-month.

 

In the meantime, the import quantity showed a continual decline in the first three months of 2010. In March 2010, Guangdong Province imported 222,000 tons of soybeans, the monthly lowest since the beginning of this year, followed by a strong rebound in the next three months, the import quantity in May 2010 reaching 405,000 tons, up 25.7% year-on-year and up 33.3% month-on-month.

 

? Almost all the importation was conducted by the mode of ordinary trade. During the first five months of 2010, enterprises within Guangdong Province imported 1.558 million tons of soybeans through the ordinary trade, down 11.9% year-on-year, accounting for 99.7% of the total import quantity of soybeans to Guangdong Province during the same period; and imported 4,235 tons through the mode of processing trade, up 5.1% year-on-year.

 

? Import by private enterprises and foreign-invested enterprises accounted for the major proportion, and that by State-owned enterprises dropped sharply. During the first five months of 2010, private enterprises of Guangdong Province imported 960,000 tons of soybeans, down 1% year-on-year, accounting for 61.4% of the total import quantity of soybeans to Guangdong Province during the same period; foreign-invested enterprises imported 600,000 tons, down 19.8% year-on-year and accounting for 38.4% of the total quantity; and State-owned enterprises imported 3,164 tons, down 94.2% year-on-year.

 

? The U.S. and Brazil were the major import sources, the import from Argentina shrinking dramatically. From January till May 2010, the imported soybeans to Guangdong Province were mainly from the U.S., Brazil and Argentina. There were 1.006 million tons imported from the U.S. and 508,000 tons from Brazil, the both totally accounting for 96.9% of the total import quantity of soybeans to Guangdong Province during the same period; and 44,000 tons were from Argentina, down 88.7% year-on-year.
